Michael B. “Shanks” McCarthy, 73, of Vienna, W.Va. and Corona Del Mar, Calif. passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at his Vienna residence. Michael was born August 1, 1940 at Parkersburg, W.Va., a son of the late John R. “Jack” and Mildred L. Myer McCarthy. Michael retired as Western Sales Manager in the builders division of Magic Chef appliances (Maytag Corporation) with responsibility for all territory west of the Mississippi River.He was a 1963 graduate of West Virginia University and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. Michael was an avid sports fan, reader, golfer, history buff, especially WW I trench warfare and world traveler, especially enjoying Paris, France. He was a lifelong Pirates and Mountaineer fan. He is survived by his wife, Mary Bahan McCarthy; two sons, Michael Stephen McCarthy (Debra) of North Hollywood, Calif. and James Cornelius McCarthy (Dana) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Mary Kathleen McCarthy (Jennifer) of Santa Cruz, Calif.; one sister, Lucinda Spainhour (Michael) of Parkersburg, W.Va.; two brothers, John McCarthy (Marlene) of Parkersburg, W.Va. and Thomas McCarthy (Lisa) of Parkersburg, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Taylor, Teagan, twins, Shyla and Shayden;and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his favorite canine companion, Murphy. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Thursday, February 20, 2014 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church, 532 Market Street, Parkersburg, W.Va. with Father John Rice officiating.There will be a visitation, with open casket, at the church one hour prior to services. The Vaughan Funeral Home, 1010 Murdoch Avenue, Parkersburg, W.Va. is assisting the family with arrangements.
