John Ellis Chalfant, 85, of Parkersburg, passed away, Friday,April 25, 2014 at Highland Oaks Health Center, McConnelsville, Ohio. John was born in Parkersburg, April 8, 1929, a son of the late Boehm Young Chalfant and Helena McLaughlin Chalfant. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1948 where he was a member of the proud Big Red Marching Band. John graduated from West Virginia University in 1953 and was attending law school when called to duty in the U.S. Army for four years with service in Korea.Upon returning to Parkersburg after his tour of duty in Korea, John joined his father in the Chalfant Realty Company (selling out the earth).He continued the family business after his father passed away in 1981. John is survived by several cousins, including Judy Reed (Ed) of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Helen W. Lockhart Chalfant on December 2, 2000; his step mother, Marian McKinley Chalfant Goebel; one sister, Mary Chalfant Brown; paternal grandparents, Claiborne Ellis and Gertrude Clark Chalfant. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Vaughan Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Pastor Sandy Runnion officiating.Visitation will be one hour prior to service.Interment will follow in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the Alzheimer's Association, 1218 Market Street, Parkersburg, WV26101.
