Gene C. Mahaney

Gene Carroll Mahaney of Mineral Wells, WV passed away Saturday afternoon, January 25, 2020, at Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg, WV. During his lifetime, Gene was diagnosed with and survived melanoma and having his car hit by a B&O train while on his way to work one night in 1979, but in the end he was unable to beat Alzheimer’s Disease. Gene and his twin sister, Janet Lee Mahaney, were born during a snow storm to Donald D. and Florence Jones Mahaney on March 3, 1942 at their Grandmother Jones’ home on Broadwater Circle, Pennsboro, WV.Gene was also a descendent of James Bentley Jones who served with General George Washington for 28-months during the Revolutionary War. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Pennsboro. Gene began his long work career when he was just 12 years old as a delivery boy for the “Grit”, a weekly news publication. After a few years of delivering the Grit, he took on a route delivering “The Clarksburg Exponent.” At age 16, Gene obtained a work permit and spent his summer vacations working at the Mid-Atlantic Glass Factory, Ellenboro, WV.The day after he graduated from Pennsboro High School in 1960 he began working full time for Mid-Atlantic Glass. While there he worked his way up to become a skilled hand blown glass craftsman. In May, 1964, Gene began his 36 year employment with E. I. DuPont Washington Works where he continued until his retirement on May 31, 2001. Gene served as a Forman during his DuPont career and retired as a Training Specialist Supervisor where he developed some of the initial safety training programs for Teflon Department personnel. Upon retirement, Gene took a year off then decided to return to work, this time for the family business, Kirby Monument Company, where he remained for seven years. While at Kirby Monument, Gene served as the Sales Manager for the Pennsboro location, Pennsboro Ritchie Memorials, Pennsboro, WV.He then moved to the home office of Kirby Monument Company in Parkersburg where he built a historical customer data base. Gene finally retired for good when his symptoms progressed. In addition to graduating from Pennsboro High School, Gene attended Parkersburg Community College and WVU-Parkersburg earning an Associates Degree in Business. Gene and Marjorie Smith Mahaney were married January 31, 1964 and were married for almost 56 years when he passed. Gene is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughters, Lisa Jill Mahaney Barnes and her husband W. Colin Barnes of Martinsville, IN; daughter, Kim Courtney Mahaney Agosto of Alexandria, VA; and, Granddaughter, Sabrina Raine Barnes of Martinsville, IN. Brother Donald Ray Mahaney and his wife Margaret Ann Mahaney of Ellenboro, WV.Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his sister who died December 7, 2019. Services will be at Vaughan Funeral Home, 1010 Murdoch Avenue, Parkersburg, WV on Saturday, February 1, 2020.Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM; funeral services will be at 11:00 AM.Burial will follow in Morris Cemetery, Cantwell, WV, Ritchie County.
