Donald "Don" Jack Sandy, 85, of Parkersburg passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, November 11, 2022. Don was born on December 21, 1936, in Cairo, West Virginia the youngest of 10 children born to the late Harley Monroe and Della Shields Sandy. He graduated from Cairo High School in 1954 and moved to Canton, Ohio to live with his sister, Maye Ayers, and work at the Hoover Factory. In 1959, he joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1965. After returning from the military Don worked with his father in the oil fields around Ritchie County, WV until going to work at Marbon (GE) in 1966 and retired in 1991.
Don married Susanne Hanlon on July 13th, 1959, and together they welcomed five children to the world. Susanne preceded Don in death on October 13th, 1981. Don Married Sandra Kay Chapman on May 25th, 1985, and welcomed her two daughters into the family. Together they united both families and watched the family expand to include 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Don was an active member of Union Valley Baptist Church, where he served his Lord and Savior in numerous positions, including Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Sunday School superintendent. He loved farming, hunting, and driving his tractor pulling a wagon full of laughing kids with his grandchildren yelling "faster Pappy". To know Don was to know the kind, selfless love of God. He was always the first to offer help to a friend in need. Don was a bright light in this world, hardworking and full of laughter.
In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his children, Donald Sandy (Rebecca), Kathy Sandy Oplinger (John), and Doug Sandy, all of Parkersburg, David Sandy (Angi) of Cayce, SC and Thomas Sandy (Lainie) of Liberty Township; his stepdaughter, Sherri Cowan (Donnie) of Cairo, WV and his grandchildren, Kayla Cox (Matt), Kelsey Chapman Austin (Jamie), Ali Staats, Garrett Sandy (Samantha), Grant Chapman, Rachel Sandy, Nicholas Sandy, Danielle McKown (Elias), Ryan Sandy, Susanne Oplinger, Jacob Sandy and Madison Oplinger; his great-grandchildren, Aidan Cox, Jocelyn Staats, Aaron Cox, Hunter Sandy, and Adeline Austin; and many other loving friends and family members.
In addition to his first wife he was preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Elizabeth Chapman; his granddaughter, Tara Sandy; his parents and nine siblings.
The family would like to ask, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Union Valley Baptist Church, 3349 Old Saint Marys Pike, Parkersburg, WV 26104.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Vaughan Kimes Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Law officiating. Interment will follow at Harper Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
