Charles William "Bill” Sams, 89, of Parkersburg, W.Va. passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Camden-Clark Medical Center, Memorial Campus. Bill was born January 17, 1925 in Parkersburg, a son of the late Charles Jefferson and Nellie Frances Guinn Sams. Bill was a retired machinistwith 27 years of service at DuPont.He previously was employed at Kootz & Stroman Machine Shop.He was a US Army veteran of the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII having served as a Sergeant with Company B 640th Tank Destroyer Battalion.He enjoyed softball and golfing at Worthington Golf Course with the senior men’s league.He was a member of the American Legion Post 15, Parkersburg and Lubeck United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen L. Sims Sams; two daughters, Karen L. Church (Steve) of Amelia, Ohio and Pamela A. Spears (Bobby) of Parkersburg; one sister, Betty I. Lehew of Murraysville, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Tiffany Arthurs (Jeremy), Andrew Church,Amber Spears and Amy Spears; two great-grandchildren, Erika Deem and Bryce Arthurs; and a niece, Barbara Collingsworth. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the Vaughan Funeral Home, 1010 Murdoch Avenue, Parkersburg with the Reverend James Martin officiating.Services will conclude with burial in Lubeck Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 15, Parkersburg.The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
